The Trump Administration's panicked blocking of Anthropic's leading AI model and its subsequent reversal brings the realization that we are close to the cusp of new government regulation on public use of AI. In the years leading up to this, there was no doubt surrounding the availability of frontier models for general use; we hadn't reached the point of model intelligence to warrant it. With Anthropic's Fable 5 and OpenAI's ChatGPT 5.6, we got a taste of what that newfound regulation might feel like. While US agencies and organizations get access, it'll be the public that gets left behind.
