Spain has recently been a steward of progressive immigration policy, granting legal status to over 500,000 illegal immigrants. This, alongside a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling, which may have been misinterpreted by smugglers, declared that migrants crossing illegally from the water couldn't be detained, may have fueled this recent extraordinary push of migration into Spain. This level and type of migration into the European Union is unsustainable and dangerous, and will continue to prompt anti-migration sentiment.
