America’s Flex | New York Times

Analysis: Trump is unwavering in his pursuit of tariffs even at the cost of immediate economic downturn within the U.S. A month ago when initial tariffs were set to go into effect Mexican and Canadian leaders bent the knee and gave in to some of Trump’s requests, including border and drug security. Despite their willingness to make changes, Trump’s rationale for tariffs runs deeper.

Analysis: The new age of American oligarcy is here. Billionares are lining up and bending the knee to appease Trump. With them comes their companies. While Bezos’s ownership of the Washington Post has long put him in Trump’s crosshairs it now provides a great bargining chip in parlaying government favors. Bezos is not the first and will not be the last billionare ready to jeporize American interests to retain their wealth.

Analysis: After Trump and Zelensky’s showdown, all on-going aid has been halted to Ukraine. Luckily – in anticipation of this the Biden administration and Ukraine made last minutes rushes to stockpile critical resources. Ukraine remains optimistic in rekindling support from the U.S. but continues to seek support elsewhere.

Analysis: Germany leads the charge in European rearmament following the Trump Administration’s mission of furthering itself from European security alliances.

Analysis: Long have we speculated how climate change will influence potential territorial expansion. While we are still far from feeling the initial effects that could cause a frenzy in land grabs and resource reshuffling, Trump’s recent focus on Greenland, Canada, and beyond starts priming powerful countries to begin finalizing their strategies.

Analysis: With the conclusion of stage one of the Israeli-Palestinian ceasefire upcoming, what lies beyond is unknown. Israeli government officials throughout the entire conflict have placed the dismantling of Hamas above the safety of captured hostages. With the opportunity to resume fighting available, now with a smaller number of hostages in Hamas control, they very well may resume the campaign to end Hamas both militarily and their ability to govern. At the same time, this ceasefire has set precedent, if fighting were to resume, there would be global backlash from opposing countries. Seemingly though, the only country that would dissuade Israel is the U.S., putting a great deal of influence into Trump’s hands.

Analysis: Trump’s focus on the Mexico-U.S. border combined with Mexican support has led to the lowest levels of illegal immigration in over a decade. New policing, policies, and a general sentiment amongst possible migrants have people fearful for crossing the border illegally. While migration and border apprehensions were declining during the end of the Biden administration, Trump’s actions have led to an unforeseen decrease..

Analysis: Trump’s fixation on Canada is not completely bizarre based on his new standpoints. Across the board, whether your ally or foe, Trump wants your country reliant on the U.S. not just through alliances or diplomatic ties but through trade and monetary value.

Analysis: As he proclaimed on the campaign trail, Trump is pushing for bitcoin to hold more sway as a currency within the federal government. It seems disastrous from a federal reserve standpoint and is most likely just grifting towards high-value cryptocurrency supporters.

Analysis: This piece truly and deeply encapsulates my current issues with the Democratic Party. While the author leaves out the positive policies Democrats put forward, now isn’t a time to look at what Democrats did right. It’s a time to look at what Democrats did oh so wrong. Democrats focus on equity instead of equality, and it’s plain pandering to extremist views, has shifted its focus away from everyday Americans and especially away from the marginalized groups it has so focused on representing.

Analysis: Deepening ties with Ukraine through both security alliances and resource sharing sounds great on paper – but the way the Trump administration is twisting Ukraine’s arm into this deal leaves a terrible taste in my mouth. As the global leader in democracy, we hold a certain obligation to support other democracies. Ensuring democracy is strong throughout the globe empowers us and enriches us. But – to what extent, and to what cost, can we sink into a single ally before expecting something in return? That something in return should never be reparations, and it should never come at the cost of the ally’s self-determination. But, I truly think it should be something.

Analysis: Germany takes a rightward shift like many other Western democracies in the past election cycle. The key issues at play were the economy, which has been hit hard by energy prices & inflation, and immigration. Above all, though – the far-right party championed by Elon Musk & JD Vance shot up in votes almost doubling their support from the last election. The global rightward shift will inevitably shift the conversation.

Analysis: X (formerly Twitter) is seemingly the best way to reach Musk. Prominent right-wing online influencers are finding programs or language they personally disagree with, then forwarding it to DOGE and Musk himself. Do they have a deep understanding of these programs? No. Do you understand the unintended consequences of revoking funding? Also, no. But they do know the little amount of power they do have by appeasing Musk gives them a warm feeling inside.
